Book launch for  The Fishes of New Zealand

Excerpt from NIWA ANNUAL REPORT 2015/16

In November 2015 Te Papa Press published “The Fishes of New Zealand”, a four-volume, 1800 page encyclopaedic guide bringing together more than 20 years of fish collection, collaboration and research of world-renowned fish experts.
During the launch at Te Papa, John Morgan (Chief executive) spoke of NIWA and Te Papa’s long history
of scientific collaboration that had resulted in the publication of this outstanding text, which describes all 1265 known New Zealand fish species, along with illustrations, maps and drawings.

NIWA was proud to be part of an important cooperative publishing achievement that advanced knowledge and understanding of the extraordinary range of fish found in New Zealand waters. We contributed through our core funding capabilities as well as by providing text, images, research and specimens, many of which were collected on voyages undertaken by NIWA vessels.
In September 2016 “The Fishes of New Zealand” was awarded the 2016 Whitley Medal for outstanding publication in Australasian zoology – regarded as Australia’s highest award for zoological publishing – the first time it has been awarded to a New Zealand book.

The Fishes of New Zealand Volumes 1-4
Edited by Clive Roberts, Andrew Stewart and Carl Struthers  Published by Te Papa Press

The Fishes of New Zealand is the result of decades of taxonomic research based at Te Papa New Zealand's National Museum in Wellington. It contains contributions from 44 fish biologists from 27 institutions across 27 across nine countries whose contributions have been skilfully edited by Clive Roberts, Andrew Stewart and Carl Struthers. The four volumed treatise contains the description of 1,262 species of fish found in New Zealand waters and includes many newly identified species as of June 2013. The four hard backed volumes are richly illustrated and immaculately presented in their own box case. This masterpiece of zoological publishing will remain New Zealand's ichthyological bible for many years to come. It replaces the only other catalogue of New Zealand fishes published in 1872.

I have had several illustrations featured in 'Seafood New Zealand Museum marine file', a monthly feature prepared by Natural Environment staff of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Items primarily report on marine biosystematics, biodiversity, commercial species, rare specimens, new discoveries, specimen collection and fieldwork.
